A finely hand-carved ash burl cup of exceptional character, fashioned from a richly figured natural burl with swirling grain and deep, warm surface patina. The vessel is beautifully hollowed and shaped, retaining its organic form while exhibiting careful craftsmanship and balance.
The dense burl grain creates a mesmerizing surface of tight curls and flowing patterns, enhanced by years of handling and use. The interior is smoothly carved, and the base is subtly footed, giving the piece a pleasing lift and stability. The form suggests use as a small covered canister, cup, or personal container—possibly for tobacco, spices, or other small personal items.
Objects carved from burl wood were prized for both durability and beauty, with each example entirely unique due to the natural growth patterns of the tree. This example stands out for its compact scale, sculptural presence, and particularly attractive figuring.
A tactile and visually compelling small object, formerly in the collection of noted New Jersey collector Jim Grievo, and now offered from Ziebarth’s.
