A compelling late 19th century Crow painted hide medicine case, constructed of softened hide and decorated on the front with bold geometric forms rendered in red and blue pigment. The design features paired diamond motifs flanked by vertical bands, a composition consistent with Crow visual language and ceremonial symbolism. The case retains its original hide suspension straps and tie closures, along with metal cone drops affixed along the lower edge, adding both visual and tactile interest.
The interior is plain, as expected, and the reverse shows extensive, honest wear consistent with use. A small period tag accompanies the piece and reads “Crow Medicine Case”, further supporting the traditional attribution. Medicine cases of this scale and presence are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples retaining strong painted decoration and intact hanging elements.
Dimensions:
Approximately 10 inches wide x 8 inches tall x 3 inches deep.
Condition:
Very good overall condition with expected age-related wear, surface abrasions, and softening to the hide. Pigment remains strong. Metal cone drops exhibit oxidation consistent with age. All wear is consistent with use and age.
Provenance:
From a Texas collection, accompanied by an old collection tag identifying the piece as a Crow medicine case.
