An exceptional 19th century hand-carved ash burl spoon distinguished by its remarkable surface, sculptural form, and rich natural figuring. Skillfully carved from a single piece of dense burl wood, the spoon displays dramatic swirling grain throughout the bowl and handle, creating a visually dynamic and highly tactile surface.

The deep, rounded bowl flows into a finely shaped handle terminating in a distinctive openwork finial with suspended carved element, lending the piece a strong sculptural presence. The entire surface has developed a deep, warm patina from age and handling, highlighting the natural figuring of the burl and emphasizing the hand-carved facets and tool marks. The choice of burl wood elevates the object beyond the utilitarian, transforming it into a work of functional folk sculpture.

Spoons of this quality—particularly those carved from burl with such pronounced figuring and elegant form—are increasingly sought after by collectors of early American treen and folk art. Both visually compelling and beautifully balanced in the hand, this example stands as a superb representation of 19th century vernacular carving.

Now presented on a custom display mount, the spoon reads as a sculptural object while retaining its integrity as a functional form.
