An exceptional early American folk art table cover, hand-sewn in wool appliqué and embroidery, dating to approximately 1870–1890. The bold composition centers on a large diamond-shaped reserve filled with flowering vines and colorful stylized birds, surrounded by rows of individually appliquéd floral medallions.

The deeply scalloped border is formed from elongated wool tabs, each embellished with a small flower and secured with contrasting blanket stitching. Worked in a rich palette of black, cream, red, green, blue, and yellow, the textile displays remarkable variety and an especially strong graphic presence.

Closely related to the 19th-century tradition of wool “penny rugs” and decorative table covers, this unusually large and sophisticated example reflects the resourcefulness and artistic imagination of early American domestic needlework. The abundant handwork, ambitious scale, and lively combination of birds and flowers make it a particularly compelling piece of textile folk art.

Presented on a custom fabric-covered conservation mount.

Condition

Remarkably well preserved considering its age, with strong color and the great majority of the appliqué and embroidered decoration remaining intact. Minor scattered wear, small losses, and occasional loose threads are consistent with its early date and handmade character.

Dimensions

Approximately 46 x 46 inches, including the custom mount.

Date

Circa 1860–1880.
