An exceptional large-scale American folk art whirligig depicting a World War I doughboy operating the mechanism of a windmill. Constructed from carved and assembled wood with sheet-metal and iron components, the elaborate composition incorporates a fully realized architectural structure, articulated soldier, four-bladed windmill, and broad tail vane.
The figure wears a dark military-style uniform and a shallow, broad-brimmed helmet closely resembling the American M1917 “doughboy” helmet introduced during World War I. His sensitively drawn face, carved clothing, jointed limbs, and substantial boots give him an unusually strong sculptural presence.
When exposed to the wind, the painted blades turn a central shaft connected to the soldier through an ingenious crank mechanism, animating his articulated arms as though he were operating the mill. The whimsical combination of military imagery and vernacular engineering likely reflects the fascination with machinery and widespread popularity of doughboy imagery following the First World War.
The miniature building is remarkably detailed, retaining its early mustard, dark green, blue, and red-painted surfaces, projecting windows, scalloped roof trim, chimney, and architectural moldings. Its ambitious scale, sophisticated mechanical construction, and unusual military subject distinguish it from more commonly encountered single-figure whirligigs.

Condition
Very good overall condition, retaining substantial early painted surface and a particularly appealing weathered patina. Scattered paint loss, oxidation, and wear are consistent with its age and original outdoor use. The figure, windmill blades, tail vane, and principal mechanical components remain present. Movement works/functions.
