A vibrant early 20th-century Plains Indian roach headdress, constructed of natural and dyed horsehair in brilliant orange and magenta, radiating dramatically from a central base. The hair is densely bound and fanned to create a striking crest, designed to move with the dancer’s motion.
Roach headdresses such as this were traditionally worn by men during dances and ceremonies, symbolizing bravery and vitality. This example survives with strong, saturated color and excellent form, making it a visually compelling and authentic piece of Native American material culture.
