A striking beaded velvet star-form whimsy or pincushion attributed to Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) makers of the Niagara region, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Constructed in a sculptural eight-point star configuration, the form is built over a firm core and covered in richly colored velvet panels in deep blue, mustard, olive, and warm orange tones.
Each radiating point is edged with finely applied glass seed beads and decorated with looped beaded tassels terminating in glass beads. Additional geometric beadwork appears across the surfaces in turquoise blue, amber, white, and metallic tones. The vibrant palette, dimensional construction, and use of commercial velvet are hallmarks of Haudenosaunee souvenir beadwork produced for both community use and the thriving Niagara Falls tourist trade around the turn of the 20th century.
Objects of this type are often referred to as whimsies or pincushions and were created as decorative domestic objects as well as souvenirs. Today they are increasingly appreciated for their sculptural qualities, vibrant color, and crossover appeal between Native American art and Victorian folk decorative arts.
An excellent and visually dynamic example with strong presence and rarity.
