Chitimacha Lidded Basket
Dimensions: 5 ¼" H x 3 ½" W x 3 ½" D
A superb early 20th century Chitimacha lidded basket of square form, finely woven in rivercane with a striking geometric design in natural, black, and golden-dyed cane. The tightly fitted lid features a bold chevron pattern, complementing the intricate diamond motif on the body.
The Chitimacha people of Louisiana are renowned for their masterful double-weave rivercane basketry, a tradition passed down through generations. This example is particularly well-executed, with crisp patterning and excellent color retention.
In outstanding condition with no breaks or losses, making it a rare survivor and an exceptional example for collectors of Southeastern Native basketry or Native American art.
