A charming mid-20th-century American painted wooden trade sign advertising “BIRD CARVINGS,” likely dating to the 1940s-1950s.
The shaped blue board is bordered in gold and decorated with individually applied, raised wooden lettering. A wonderfully stylized three-dimensional swan projects from the lower portion of each side, its carved and painted form giving the sign considerable sculptural depth and visual character.
Made for a commercial woodcarver/decoy maker, New England. Two metal screw eyes along the crest allow it to be suspended for display.
Painted wood with applied wooden letters and carved swan.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with scattered scratches, small paint losses, surface wear, and minor abrasions consistent with age and use. The painted surface and applied elements remain stable. Hanging hardware may be a later replacement.
