A wonderfully graphic early American tailor or dry-cleaning trade sign advertising “MEN’S SUITS SPONGED AND PRESSED 35¢.” Bold gold lettering is presented against a richly textured black schmaltz sand-painted ground, with an especially striking oversized “35” dominating the composition.

The sign retains its original narrow molded wooden frame with traces of early red and gold-painted decoration. Its strong typography, unusual wording, and remarkably low advertised price provide an evocative glimpse into the neighborhood tailoring and garment-care trade of the early 20th century. Two period screw-eye hangers remain along the upper edge.

Painted and sand-finished wood. American, circa 1920.

Condition

Very good overall condition with a highly appealing, naturally aged surface. The lettering remains bold and readily legible. Scattered rubbing, surface wear, and losses to the frame are consistent with age and use.

Dimensions

Approx. 35 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 2 inches.
