A finely worked English needlework sampler dated 1837, stitched by Ann Gore, aged 10 years, and completed at Marsh’s Seminary on June 23, 1837. The sampler is executed on linen ground and features a traditional arrangement of alphabets, numerals, and moral verse, above a charming pictorial band depicting a central house flanked by trees, birds, and stylized garden motifs. Below, baskets of flowers and ornamental borders complete the composition.

The verse reads in part as a devotional expression of gratitude and learning, typical of early 19th century English schoolgirl samplers. The needlework displays confident, well-balanced stitching with a pleasing palette of soft greens, blues, reds, and earth tones. The sampler is housed in a gilt frame and has been professionally mounted, ensuring both stability and presentation.

Of particular importance is the extensive handwritten family history affixed to the reverse, documenting lineage and identifying the sampler as having been worked by Ann Gore, a great-great-grandmother within the recorded family line. Such detailed genealogical documentation significantly enhances the historical value and interpretive richness of the piece. Measures approx 20 x 16 inches.

Condition:
Good overall condition with visible areas of wear and fading to the textile, consistent with age and display history. Minor losses and thinning to the linen ground in places. Framing is stable and professional.

Provenance:
From London trade, with original family history retained on the reverse of the frame, providing clear historical context and lineage.
