An exceptional late 19th-century Native American pipe attributed to the Great Lakes region, dating circa 1880–1890. The substantial catlinite bowl is ornamented with contrasting pewter inlay and retains a warm, naturally aged surface. Its long ash stem is finely worked with continuous spiral or twist carving and further embellished with brass tacks.
The combination of the sculptural catlinite bowl, decorative metal inlay, and unusually long, carefully carved stem gives the pipe a commanding presence. Measuring approximately 27 inches overall, it is an especially strong and highly decorative example of late 19th-century Great Lakes pipe-making traditions.

Condition
Excellent overall condition considering its age. The catlinite exhibits areas of discoloration, surface variation, minor abrasions, and wear consistent with age and handling. The bowl fits loosely upon the stem as a result of natural age-related shrinkage of the wooden stem. The twist-carved decoration and brass tacks remain well preserved.
