A beautifully rendered portrait by George Raab (American, 1866–1943), an important early Wisconsin painter, educator, and longtime figure in Milwaukee’s artistic community.
Painted with loose, confident brushwork, the composition depicts an elegantly dressed young woman seated outdoors and wearing a broad-brimmed hat ornamented with colorful flowers. Her softly modeled face and pale blue clothing emerge against a richly painted background of green foliage. Raab balances the intimacy of traditional portraiture with the broken brushwork, natural light, and fresh color associated with American Impressionism.
Born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Raab studied in Milwaukee and Europe before establishing himself as an influential artist and teacher in Milwaukee. He served as curator of the Layton Art Gallery from 1902 until 1922 and became particularly admired for his landscapes and portraits.
The reverse bears two “George Raab, 1866–1943, Estate” stamps, providing direct estate provenance. Presented in a handsome giltwood frame.
Condition
Very good overall condition. The painted surface presents beautifully, with minor wear consistent with age. The giltwood frame exhibits scattered surface wear and small losses. Not examined outside the frame.
