A finely constructed Inuit model kayak, likely dating from the early 20th century and possibly originating in the Western Canadian Arctic.

The long, narrow vessel is formed from a lightweight wooden framework covered with tightly stretched and stitched hide. Its elegant profile terminates in sharply pointed, gently upturned ends. The deck retains miniature wooden paddles or hunting implements secured beneath hide lashings, together with a small carved bone or antler fitting near the cockpit.

Such models faithfully reproduced the construction of full-sized skin-covered kayaks and the specialized equipment carried by Inuit hunters while pursuing seals and other marine animals. At 32 inches long, this unusually substantial example has considerable sculptural presence and retains a warm, richly aged surface.

Condition

Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and the fragile nature of the materials. The hide covering exhibits discoloration, abrasions, dryness, cracking, and localized losses, including an opening near the cockpit. Some deck fittings, lashings, or miniature implements may be incomplete or replaced. The structure remains suitable for careful display.

Dimensions

Approximately 42 inches long × 4 inches wide × 3 1/4 inches high.
