A spirited American folk art pood carved from wood and enlivened with a boldly painted surface. Carved by Aaron Mountz. Aaron Mountz was born in 1873 in Cumberland County, PA. He was an apprentice and younger contemporary of William Schimmel, who gained more notoriety and recognition than Mountz. Pennsylvania German. Textured carving suggests the animal’s coat, while the broad chest, cropped tail, pendant ears, and vividly articulated face convey tremendous character. A wonderfully individual work of vernacular animal sculpture.
