A sculptural wooden tankard richly carved with sweeping foliate scrollwork, its fitted lid crowned by an expressive bust of a bearded gentleman. A carved dog forms the thumbpiece above the handle, adding a charming figurative detail to the elaborate composition.
The cylindrical body is framed by a crosshatched band beneath the rim and molded borders above a shaped, footed base. Carefully delineated hair, beard, and facial features lend the portrait finial a distinctive character. The warm amber-brown surface, with darker tones in the recesses, emphasizes the depth and movement of the carving.
Probably Scandinavian in origins, a phenomenal piece of carved folk art.
