An exceptional and highly unusual 19th century carved wooden butter print, depicting a long-legged heron-form bird, a subject rarely encountered in American butter prints. While birds are a known motif in domestic carving, representations of wading birds such as herons are particularly scarce, as most surviving examples favor roosters, eagles, or generalized fowl. The choice of subject reflects a more observational and naturalistic influence, setting this example apart from more common farmyard imagery.

The heron is shown in profile with an elongated neck and slender body, confidently rendered in deep relief and framed by stylized foliate elements within a circular field. The carving is bold and sculptural, with assured, flowing cuts that give the surface strong visual presence and depth. The reverse retains its original cylindrical handle, richly worn from use and exhibiting a warm, untouched patina.

Butter prints of this complexity and subject matter were almost certainly produced in small numbers, making this a rare survival. Its combination of uncommon iconography, strong folk carving, and excellent Midwest provenance places it among the more desirable examples of 19th century American domestic folk art.
