A compelling religious watercolor and ink drawing by Stephen J. M. Palmer (American, 1882–1965), the distinctive Wisconsin visionary and outsider artist. Dating circa 1954–1965, the work presents a frontal image of Christ with the Sacred Heart, encircled by a radiant turquoise halo and framed by a boldly colored, meticulously patterned border.
Palmer’s devotional compositions are distinguished by their rigorous symmetry, emphatic linework, saturated color, and direct spiritual intensity. Here, the solemn, wide-eyed face of Christ is rendered with finely drawn hair and beard, while the surrounding rays, scrolling vines, berries, and ornamental borders give the image the character of a personal religious icon.
A laborer and logger who lived and worked in Wisconsin and Minnesota, Palmer began producing his visionary religious drawings late in life. His surviving body of work is devoted largely to Christian imagery and reflects the deeply personal theology that occupied his final years.

Condition
Very good overall condition. The paper exhibits toning, scattered discoloration, and minor surface irregularities consistent with age. The colors remain strong and visually engaging. The professional frame has light surface wear. Not examined outside the frame.
